Today, October 7, 2026, is the time to remember October 7, 2023, the day of the Hamas attacks in Israel, uniquely horrifying, brutal, murderous attacks on civilians, killing about 1200 people, and then taking 251 hostages.

Today is for this and nothing else. You cannot begin to think about these murderous attacks without thinking of what preceded and what followed them. But that is not for today. Today, October 7, is the day to remember that other October 7. I don't know what remembrance can do, but it is necessary. And necessary for all of us, Palestinians, Israelis, and all the rest of us outside.

Do not be drawn into anything else: this happened because of that; what happened afterwards is worse; everything that happened afterwards was justified by October 7, etc., etc., etc. Not today. Today is a day for sorrow, for mourning. Tomorrow, yes, we must get back to everything that surrounds October 7, before and after, especially the horrors that came after. But tomorrow can wait. Today, remember the dead, the hostages of October 7, 2023.
