Dear Friends,          The destruction of the Shajarah Tayyebeh primary school

It’s increasingly clear that the US is responsible for the destruction of the Shajarah Tayyebeh primary school in Minab, southern Iran. New reports by Amnesty International and the UN affirm this. Even some US intelligence reports suggest that the school was destroyed by a Tomahawk missile, the US is the only combatant in this war using Tomahawks. Let’s say that there is still a very small possibility that the US is not responsible.

With that in view it’s still time for questions. According to Amnesty International’s investigation there are two main possibilities as to why the school was targeted (Tomahawks are precision weapons, no one seems to be suggesting that the missile hit the school by accident). First, the US was using out of date intelligence: the school building had been part of an adjacent IRGC compound; but it had ceased to be several years ago and is now clearly separated from it by roads and fences. Second, since the school was adjacent to the IRGC compound it was deemed a legitimate target without proper verification of its status. The first is already a violation of international humanitarian law; the second could be construed as a war crime. For the Amnesty International report, see:

I don’t know how decisions about missile strikes are made, nor who makes them. But someone does make them, and makes them based on intelligence, good or bad. Whoever made this decision knows what happened – very expensive missiles aren’t just fired off into the blue without any record.

If the US is responsible – and, again there’s still a very small possibility that it’s not – then all the talk by Hegseth about having an investigation is just another lie. They must already know who made the decision to launch the missile, and on what grounds they targeted the school. If they don’t then the level of incompetence at the Pentagon is far worse even than anyone imagined.

Love and solidarity,

            Bobby
